Backend Engineer

We're looking for a Backend Engineer to join our team at Expect.

Expect is a mission-driven, for-profit company addressing the climate crisis by empowering enterprise organisations to reduce carbon emissions via the Expect Decarbonisation Intelligence Platform.

Join our team as a Backend Engineer, where your work will provide the data, insights, and recommendations necessary to enable enterprise organisations to decarbonise their organisation across their operations, their products, and their supply chain.

While our founding team is located in and around London, we operate with a distributed, remote-first mentality. We are hiring a diverse, global team of stewards, who act with integrity, to mitigate climate change with urgency.

This role will be based in the United Kingdom, where you must have the right to work.

What you'll bring

  • You have a sharp, intuitive sense for delivering backend solutions. You know when to research, experiment, and plan, and when to trust your gut to rapidly build a solution.
  • Backend is your primary focus, but you will work on any part of the stack to get a job done in order to deliver a positive outcome for users and their organisations.
  • Your Python chops are solid, and you dabble in other languages.
  • You’ve shipped and iterated on versioned APIs, whether REST or GraphQL.
  • You can administer relational databases such as PostgreSQL, and like to fish from data lakes.
  • Cloud services like AWS, GCP, or Azure have served as the backbone for your data and services.
  • You understand or have used serverless architectures such as AWS Lambda or GCP Cloud Functions.
  • You’re proactive about establishing and ensuring test coverage.
  • You’re an outstanding communicator and a natural collaborator. You listen, observe, consider, and pitch-in, and you're eager to work in lockstep with your product team to ensure perfect delivery.
  • You're bold and confident but never cocky, and will thrive in a culture that cherishes these traits.
  • You strive for greatness. You sweat the details. Delivering excellence is what you do.
  • As a backend engineer, your résumé and Github speak for themselves.

What you'll get

As a remote-first company, you'll be able to work from wherever you choose. Your work hours can be flexible — you are measured by the outcomes you produce, rather than the number of hours you work.

You will have 3 weeks paid holiday in addition to bank holidays, plus a mandatory 2 weeks paid holiday for the entire company to log off and celebrate winter holidays.

You will receive stock options in an early-stage company. New Apple equipment will be purchased for you, and you will receive a stipend for setting up your home office.

Mental health and wellbeing are common themes in the startup industry. We provide a working environment and coaching where it is okay to discuss these typically taboo topics, and provide mental health insurance and a self-care stipend for all of our team members.

Other details include

At Expect, you can be the person you are, regardless of ethnicity, religion, political affiliation, age, disability, sexual orientation, size, and/or gender identity. We provide a safe, welcoming space for those who are marginalised. Expect does not tolerate harassment in any form.

We are building a diverse team and urge individuals with varied backgrounds to apply to our open roles. Let's do the hard work to make ourselves and our planet better, together.

Please note that a successful candidate will be subject to a background check. By applying for this role, you confirm that information submitted is accurate and that you understand falsification is cause for denial or termination of employment.
