Job Summary

What you will do: We are a small team of data lovers using data for the common good, helping the University of Michigan improve our world through data-informed philanthropy. We not only transform data into action, we do so mindfully, maintaining a holistic commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in all that we do. This position is for a data engineer who can wrangle messy and complicated data, pull data from APIs, and build structured data products for use in machine learning and artificial intelligence-based tools for university fundraising. A typical work week will include a large amount of programming and data pipeline development, a fair amount of data management, data analysis, and requirements gathering, and some documentation, outreach, brainstorming, visualization, and other tasks.

Required Qualifications
Senior level:
A commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace.
Mindfulness of biases in data and data processes.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience, with demonstrated competencies in information retrieval, computer science, data analysis, or similar fields.
The ability to do serious data munging and data wrangling is important. Demonstrated experience with SQL plus knowledge of another data preparation language (preferably Python and Spark). These tools will be used to merge large datasets, locate and clean messy records, recode missing values, convert between data formats, and construct standardized datasets for wider use.
5+ years of experience with "big data" data storage formats and query tools. This may include work with Hadoop, Hive, Parquet, Delta Lake, or NoSQL databases.
5+ years of experience with Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS, or Databricks.
5+ years of experience with modern data engineering workflows and frameworks.
5+ years of experience with software development best practices (e.g., Agile methods and unit testing) and version control tools.
Curiosity, and teamwork skills to collaborate with all kinds of peers and to solve challenging questions head-on.
5+ years of experience developing interactive, reusable and self-service online analytics tools.
5+ years of experience with multiple machine learning and data mining concepts and techniques.
5+ years of experience with cloud-based analytics tools.

Underfill Statement
This position will be filled at the Senior or Intermediate level depending upon the qualifications of the selected candidate. Please note the salary range for each title:
Senior: $100,000 - $109,000
Intermediate: $75,000 - $85,000
