Director of Engineering

We're looking for someone to help us grow our engineering team and take our product to the next level. At Dataquest, we've built a state-of-the-art infrastructure that enables us to teach tens of thousands of students every month. We have an in-browser coding environment that runs student code, checks it for correctness, and gives useful feedback to students.

In order to make this work, we automatically provision Python, CLI, Spark, and Jupyter environments for students. We work with technologies like React, Docker, Kubernetes, Django (including channels and celery), and Python. Tying everything together is a huge challenge, and as a result we've prioritized building a strong engineering team.

We're looking for someone who's passionate about building high-quality, scalable, services. Ideally you've built something at scale, whether at work or on your own. Balancing adding customer value (shipping fast) with clean code and architecture is tricky, but we've been able to do both well so far. We're looking for someone who understands the tradeoffs on both sides, and can make good decisions on the future of our architecture.

As we're an educational company, we're looking for someone who's passionate about teaching. This both involves sharing our mission (to give people access to high quality education at a low cost), and wanting to mentor and grow an engineering team.

Our engineering team (currently 2 people) will be growing this year, but is still small, so we're looking for someone who can code and ship features as well as mentoring a team. We're open to hiring someone without a lot of management experience, as long as you have strong expertise in the technologies.

You'll have a lot of latitude over technical decisions, and you'll have significant input on product decisions as well. This is a great role if you want a make huge impact on the world, grow a business, and rapidly expand your skillset.
